Was my sports betting legal?

March Madness online-poker - What is legal and what is not in the complex (and lucrative) world of sports betting.

Daniel Roberts reporter

Las Vegas bettingTry this in your own hometown.

Fortune in the story behind Ted of Forstmann's deepened this month controversial sports betting history in the history of "Ted of Forstmann's bad bet." The facts have meanwhile good been documented: last fall, an action prompted Forstmann - who is in charge IMG one of the biggest talent agencies in the world - recognized he was betting on pro football, NCAA College basketball and tennis matches IMG clients (although Forstmann appears stopped sportsbook have entered before, that business College). The legality of his is not officially questionable and his concentrated instead on ethics the most chatter gambling and whether he violates all rules of the various sports governing bodies. (So far it seems he didn't.)

But have a worthwhile question Fortune readers as March Madness can season fast approaches, what a typical person - a that have a hand in business is not - to do allowed on sports betting.

The answer, it turns out, is anything but simple. The reason: Laws are about gaming or legalized bets (as opposed to "Gambling", is usually illegal) tarnish, vary from State to State and are hotly debated.

According to Chuck Humphrey, a Colorado Attorney law specializing in gambling, boils down the fundamental core of the law, few people know a distinction or make: the laws differ depending on the person, the bet or the weather, and the person the bet, i.e. the bookmakers or in more informal situations, the person running a pool. "The most common error is that laws are to apply the same for both parties", says Humphrey. The production of bets, he says, is legal (or at least is not pursuing) in most States, including California and New York. However, taking a bet is illegal in most States.

Also this is the case with federal law. "There is no federal law that makes it a crime to make a bet", says Professor I. Nelson rose, gaming law expert and author of an internationally syndicated column called gambling and the law. "Even if it violated no law with an illegal bookie, the weather."

But with a few exceptions, gambling laws state issues are traditionally, no question of federal law important to us.

About half of the 50 States have old laws on the books to criminalize the production of betting. However the Government only gets involved if we are serious – say, a high-based betting ring or organised crime. In terms of "social betting' - such as a low-stakes poker game - rose says authorities turning a blind eye. "Federal laws generally grudging permission selected by ban," he says.

A small number of States have laws that enable the taking of bets or bookmaking. Most of you make auctions allowing usually uses March Madness pool room "Calcuttas" or bet. Humphrey, says that March Madness pools generally not tracked, because you are usually connected with someone money except the bettors. (In other words, the person who typically runs a pool a cut takes not.)

Where bookmaker is legal? Each of the following States can for some sort of bet taking, although what allowed is very specific, so that this does not mean you can legally begin, a new career as a bookmaker: Alaska; Delaware; Mississippi; Montana; Nevada; New Mexico; North Dakota; Oregon; Washington; and Wyoming. In addition, betting Connecticut, Florida, Nevada, Puerto Rico Rhode Iceland all taking of allow to Jai Alai, a popular sport for the player. Casinos is of course all in Vegas, betting legal.

Not surprisingly, says Anthony Cabot to confuse a famous international gaming lawyer gambling still almost all not experts based in Las Vegas, the issue of sport. "States on this are broken down," stressed he who makes a general, uniform minimum set of laws that complicated.

What about online betting? Thanks to 2006 unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), the online betting website operators commit a crime by accepting money from US citizens to fund your accounts. As for the use of the sites, Humphrey says are "Enforcement actions against individuals almost not existent." In 2010 in particular was New Jersey the first State to legalize some forms of online gambling (Washington, manufactured on the other hand, to put it a crime on the Internet recently).

Some politicians start for looser legislation, lobby on potential financial aid show that the regulated gambling could bring. Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank (D) has the leading proponent of cargo, and U.S. representative Jim McDermott (D), Washington, quoted in 2007, an estimate that the US could get revenues of anywhere from $3 to $15 billion when it legalized Internet gambling.

The snack then is, for most readers, occasional bets on the race track, keno games in bars and participation in March Madness pools will not bring the Feds to your door any time soon.

Those with the pools are however technically to break the law. But probably not set off alarms with law enforcement is it. Especially when you consider that as a source, who shared with us are there pools goes even when several District Attorney's Office betting basketball tournament. And of course are also University events around editors: a source told fortune that reporter once interviewed him for a story about the illegality of the sports pool, killed to history in the eleventh hour. The reason for this? His editor was his own pool organize.
